A recent study has revealed that overweight women using weight loss medications, specifically GLP-1 drugs, are 30% less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer compared to those not on these medications. Conducted by Dr. Elizabeth McDonald from the University of Pennsylvania, the study analyzed data from over 110,000 women aged 45 to 90, with 15,254 using GLP-1 medications. The findings suggest that these drugs may reduce systemic inflammation and have metabolic effects that could inhibit tumor growth. While the study is observational and cannot definitively prove causation, it adds to the evidence supporting the investigation of weight loss drugs as potential cancer prevention tools. Additional research presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference indicated that GLP-1 medications might also reduce the progression risk of several cancers, including lung and colorectal cancer. Experts, including Dr. Eleonora Teplinsky, have emphasized the need for more clinical trials to better understand the implications of GLP-1 drugs in cancer prevention and treatment.
