Uttar Pradesh is set to launch a significant plantation drive today under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, coinciding with World Environment Day. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate the event in the Kukrail forest area of Lucknow, where over 200 saplings will be planted. The state government has ambitious plans to plant five crore saplings in just one day, contributing to a broader goal of 35 crore saplings by the year 2026. The initiative will see participation from various sectors, including schools, colleges, and social organizations, across 17 municipal corporations, 825 development blocks, and all gram panchayats. The forest department, in collaboration with several other departments, will oversee the plantation efforts, which will take place in various locations such as around ponds, roads, and expressways. Additionally, a seminar addressing climate change challenges will be held, featuring discussions on wetland management and the youth's role in environmental conservation. This year's World Environment Day theme emphasizes the connection between nature and climate action.
