West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), visited the Sakhawat Memorial School in South Kolkata on Thursday, where the strongrooms for Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are located. This visit followed allegations from TMC candidates, Kunal Ghosh and Shashi Panja, who staged a sit-in protest outside the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, claiming irregularities in the handling of the EVMs. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari's lawyer, Suryaneel Das, criticized Banerjee's prolonged presence in the strongroom, labeling it unconstitutional. The Election Commission of India (ECI) responded to the allegations, asserting that no discrepancies were found after an investigation. West Bengal Circle Officer Manoj Kumar confirmed that the strongrooms were sealed in the presence of candidates and election agents, emphasizing that the double-locking system prevents unauthorized access. The BJP accused the TMC of fabricating stories to mislead the public, with candidate Tapas Roy asserting that TMC's actions were unfounded. Polling in West Bengal took place in two phases on April 23 and 29, with vote counting set for May 4.
