Claire Dowling has made history by being appointed the first female captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, a prestigious golf organization. Dowling, who will take office for the 2026/27 term after the traditional driving-in ceremony on September 25, 2026, has been a member of the R&A since 2015 and has an impressive record as an amateur golfer. She represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup four times, playing a key role in the team’s first victory over the USA in 1986. Dowling's contributions extend beyond playing; she has been actively involved in golf administration, holding various positions including chair of England Golf’s Handicap and Course Rating Committee. Her leadership experience includes serving on the Rules Committee and the General Committee of the R&A. Dowling succeeds Dennis Watson, who was captain for the 2025/26 term, marking a new chapter in the club's history with her appointment.
