On Monday, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, announced the creation of five new districts—Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass—expanding the Union Territory's total from two to seven. This decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance grassroots governance and decentralize administrative functions, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a developed Ladakh. Saxena stated that the move will facilitate faster public service delivery, particularly in remote areas. The announcement comes ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's upcoming visit to Leh on April 30, where he will review security and developmental projects. The Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance welcomed the decision, viewing it as an opportunity for meaningful dialogue, while also urging Shah to address their demands, including the withdrawal of cases against individuals arrested during recent unrest and compensation for victims of police violence.
