Autorickshaw drivers in Kerala are facing significant financial strain due to rising petrol prices, which have surged to over ₹113 per litre. Many drivers report that recent fuel price hikes have drastically reduced their daily income, with petrol costs increasing four times since mid-May. In response, some drivers have started charging passengers an unofficial extra fare of ₹10, although this practice risks penalties from transport authorities. The All Kerala Independent Auto Workers Union (HMS) is mobilizing drivers for a march to the Secretariat on June 10, demanding that the government increase the minimum fare to ₹50 and allow an additional charge of ₹25 for every kilometer beyond the minimum fare. The union's demands extend beyond fare increases, calling for more parking facilities, action against illegal transport services, and better management of welfare funds for workers. The protest highlights the urgent need for government intervention to address the rising operational costs that threaten drivers' livelihoods.
