On Thursday, Uttarakhand Police filed the first chargesheet under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in a case involving alleged triple talaq and halala in Haridwar district. The chargesheet names nine individuals, including the husband, Danish, who is accused of subjecting his wife to physical assault and mental torture for dowry after their marriage two-and-a-half years ago. The woman claims that her husband ended their marriage through triple talaq and subsequently pressured her to undergo Nikah Halala, forcing her to marry another man as a condition for returning to her matrimonial home. The case was initially registered on April 4, and the police had initially invoked sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, due to technical delays in integrating UCC provisions into the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) portal. Following the investigation, UCC sections were added to the chargesheet, which has now been submitted for judicial proceedings.
