Chirag Patel, an Indian-origin consultant neurosurgeon at University Hospital of Wales, has been suspended for eight months due to serious professional misconduct involving a patient identified as 'Patient A'. The tribunal found that Patel engaged in a sexual relationship with her after performing three surgeries between February 2019 and December 2021. During this relationship, he prescribed opioid painkillers, including morphine and diazepam, without proper documentation, claiming he was coerced by the patient who threatened to expose their affair. Patel expressed regret for his actions and stated that he was afraid of losing his job, which he valued highly. The relationship reportedly lasted until January 2023, and after it ended, Patient A approached the police with allegations against him. Although no criminal charges were filed, Patel voluntarily reported himself to the General Medical Council (GMC). The tribunal characterized his actions as persistent misconduct that demonstrated a reckless disregard for patient safety.
