Somerville, Massachusetts, has announced a new policy allowing licensed bars, cafes, and restaurants to extend their operating hours during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will run from June 11 to July 19. Under this temporary policy, businesses may serve alcohol from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. and remain open until 3 a.m. This initiative aims to foster community engagement and provide more opportunities for residents to gather and watch matches. Mayor Jake Wilson emphasized the excitement surrounding the tournament, stating that the changes will help local businesses thrive. Interested establishments must submit requests to the city for extended hours, with no restrictions on the number of dates they can request. Additionally, Somerville plans to host public watch parties and a community soccer tournament, SomerCup 2026, at Dilboy Stadium. The Massachusetts House of Representatives has also passed legislation allowing bars to serve alcohol until 3 a.m. and permitting public drinking in designated outdoor areas during the World Cup, which is now under consideration by the state Senate.
