In a proactive measure to enhance public safety ahead of the monsoon season, the Delhi government has ordered an immediate survey and removal of trees deemed unsafe across its 1,400 km arterial road network. The directive, issued by the Public Works Department (PWD) on May 8, 2026, requires zonal officials to complete the survey by May 15 and remove identified hazardous trees by May 31. This initiative follows several tragic incidents in previous years, including the death of a 50-year-old man and injuries to his daughter when an old neem tree fell on their motorcycle in Kalkaji, south Delhi. The order emphasizes the need for a thorough inspection and mandates that officials submit a certificate confirming the absence of dangerous trees in their areas. Additionally, for each tree removed, the PWD must plant 10 saplings and care for them for seven years. The environment ministry has also outlined emergency procedures for tree removal under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994, allowing for swift action in cases posing immediate danger.
