In the recent elections held in northern Tamil Nadu, the Dravidian major parties, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), managed to secure a number of seats; however, they faced considerable competition from the Tamilaga Vivasayigal Katchi (TVK). A significant upset occurred in the Katpadi Assembly constituency, where DMK's general secretary Duraimurugan, who has been a consistent winner since the 1996 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, finished in third place. TVK candidate Dr. M. Sudhakar emerged victorious with 69,868 votes, while AIADMK's V. Ramu followed closely in second with 63,998 votes. Duraimurugan received 62,225 votes, marking a notable decline in his electoral fortune. These results reflect a changing political landscape in the region, with the TVK making a strong impact in areas traditionally dominated by the Dravidian parties.
