India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Thursday that it is maintaining contact with the family of ex-naval officer Purnendu Tiwari, who is currently detained in Qatar. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that Tiwari's situation involves multiple legal proceedings and should not be confused with a separate case in which he received relief. Tiwari, along with other former Indian Navy personnel, was detained in August 2022 on espionage-related charges linked to a submarine program. While seven of the eight detained individuals have returned to India, Tiwari remains in Qatar due to ongoing legal matters. In December 2023, Qatar's Court of Appeal commuted the death sentences previously awarded to all eight men. The Indian government is mobilizing diplomatic channels and providing legal assistance to support Tiwari and his family.
