On Tuesday, a tragic incident occurred at a road expansion site on the Asuran Crossing-Pipraich route in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, where 68-year-old labourer Hans Raj Yadav fell into an uncovered drain. Eyewitnesses reported that Yadav fell into an excavation where iron rods were protruding, with one rod piercing his abdomen. Emergency services transported him to the hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival. In response, police have filed an FIR against the contractor for negligence, and disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Public Works Department (PWD) officials, including the suspension recommendation for junior engineer DK Singh. Residents expressed outrage over the lack of proper barricading around the open drain, which posed a risk to pedestrians. Following the incident, a high-level inquiry committee has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability.
