Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma of the Delhi High Court has taken a strong stance against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal and other senior party leaders by initiating contempt proceedings. This action follows allegedly defamatory and contemptuous social media posts targeting both the judge and the court regarding the excise policy case. During the proceedings, Justice Sharma described the posts as 'extremely vilifying' and asserted that they represent a broader attempt to undermine judicial authority. She emphasized that the law of contempt is designed to protect the judiciary as an institution, not just individual judges. Justice Sharma stated, 'I won’t be scared of a political campaign against me,' reinforcing the court's commitment to uphold its integrity against external pressures. The judge had previously dismissed requests for her recusal from the case, asserting that unfounded claims of bias do not warrant withdrawal. The High Court is set to issue further orders on the contempt proceedings after additional submissions are heard.
