The Uttar Pradesh government has reiterated its guidelines for the treatment of Members of Parliament (MPs) and legislators, emphasizing the need for officials to stand up, welcome them respectfully, and attentively address their concerns. Chief Secretary SP Goyal issued this reminder through a government order on May 7, 2026, citing ongoing violations of protocol guidelines that have been reported by public representatives in the state legislature. Goyal highlighted that this issue has been raised multiple times, with 15 previous government orders issued since 2017. He stressed that officers must ensure compliance, including saving the contact numbers of public representatives to respond promptly. The Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, previously reviewed this situation and called for adherence to these protocols. However, the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, Satish Mahana, criticized the repeated issuance of such orders as ineffective, suggesting they serve merely as an 'eyewash' without real consequences for violators. BJP vice-president and Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Vijay Pathak noted that adherence to protocol is essential to avoid breaches of privilege.
