Kevin Minto, a former soldier and metal detectorist, made an extraordinary discovery in a field near Ilminster, Somerset: a gold Roman ring dating back to AD 297. Initially mistaking it for a coin, Minto was astonished to find it was a beautifully crafted ring featuring an engraved gemstone of the goddess Victoria. The South West Heritage Trust announced the acquisition of the ring and a hoard of 297 Roman coins for £78,000, ensuring they remain in Somerset. Minto, who will split the proceeds with a friend and the landowner, plans to pay off his mortgage and reduce his work hours. The ring, weighing 48 grams, is noted for its impressive scale and artistry, with curators suggesting it may have belonged to a wealthy Roman figure.
