Foreign Office issues warning for two countries over virus with 50% fatality rate

The Foreign Office has issued a new travel warning following the outbreak of Ebola. The FCDO has shared “updated information” to border crossings between Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. The FCDO has also shared the addition of information about a declaration of an Ebola outbreak in DRC on 15 May. The updates come via the FCDO’s ‘Warnings and insurance’ and ‘Health’ pages. It says: "Risks associated with the proximity of potential fighting in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) may affect people on the Rwandan side of the border. International borders are often not well marked in remote areas, and you could unknowingly cross into DRC. You may see a presence of military personnel on both sides of the border. The border crossings between Rwanda and DRC could close at short notice."t The average Ebola disease case fatality rate is around 50%, the WHO says. It added: "On 15 May the Democratic Republic of Congo Ministry of Health announced an outbreak of Ebola Bundibugyo in the North-Eastern Ituri Province, read more about the Ebola outbreak on TravelHealth Pro and see information on Ebola and similar diseases. "World Health Organisation (WHO) have declared this a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. "Due to the outbreak, you may experience heightened health screening at international borders in the region. Check entry requirements for the country you’re travelling to or transiting." It comes as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have cancelled their three-day World Cup preparation training camp and a planned farewell to fans in the capital, Kinshasa, because of an outbreak of Ebola in the east of the country. “There were three stages of preparation: in Kinshasa to say goodbye to the public, Belgium and Spain with two friendly matches ... and the third stage from 11 June in Houston. Only one stage was cancelled – the one in Kinshasa,” team spokesperson Jerry Kalemo said. Fifa issued a statement saying it “is aware of and monitoring the situation regarding an Ebola outbreak and is in close communication with the DRC football association [Fecofa] to ensure that the team are made aware of all medical and security guidance.”
