Carmen Mercedes Lineberger, a former federal prosecutor, has been charged with stealing a sealed volume of the report prepared by special counsel Jack Smith regarding the criminal case against former President Donald Trump. The indictment, unsealed on Wednesday, outlines four counts against Lineberger, including theft of government property and charges related to the removal and alteration of public records. Allegedly, she saved the sealed report on her government-issued computer under the deceptive file name 'Bundt_Cake_Recipe.pdf' and emailed it to her personal Gmail account on December 1, 2025. At the time, Lineberger was serving as a managing Assistant U.S. Attorney in Fort Pierce, Florida. Judge Aileen Cannon had previously issued an order prohibiting the Department of Justice (DOJ) from sharing Volume II of Smith's report. Lineberger appeared in court on Wednesday and was released without posting bond. The case against Trump, which alleged he retained classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence after leaving office, was dismissed by Cannon in July 2024, citing constitutional violations in Smith's appointment. The DOJ later dropped its appeal after Trump won a second term in the November 2024 election.
