Smita Patil, one of the finest actresses in Hindi cinema, passed away at the young age of 31 on December 13, 1986, due to complications from childbirth. Renowned for her performances in films such as Mandi, Arth, and Ardh Satya, Patil's life was marked by her controversial marriage to actor Raj Babbar in 1983, which drew public scrutiny as Babbar left his first wife, Nadira Babbar, for her. In an interview, filmmaker Aruna Raje, a close friend of Patil, revealed that Smita was deeply in love with Raj, to the point of obsession. Raje recounted how Patil observed the traditional Karwa Chauth fast for Babbar despite being seven months pregnant and advised against it. Raje noted that Patil's love was both profound and self-destructive, leading to a sense of isolation as her friends and family distanced themselves. Throughout her brief career, Patil starred in over 80 films and was honored with two National Film Awards and the Padma Shri in 1985.
