Taiwan's equity market has overtaken Canada’s, becoming the sixth largest in the world with a market capitalization of $4.47 trillion. This significant growth, exceeding 35% this year, is largely attributed to the rising demand for artificial intelligence-linked shares and the impressive performance of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), which now has a market value of $1.8 trillion and constitutes nearly 45% of the local equity benchmark. In contrast, Canada's equity market has only grown by about 5% this year, reaching $4.44 trillion. The disparity highlights how the composition of national indices influences market performance, with Taiwan benefiting from a tech-heavy market amidst a global surge in semiconductor and AI demand, while Canada, reliant on resource and finance sectors, faces challenges from volatile commodity prices and slowing economic growth.
