Viviane Lapointe (MP for Sudbury, Ontario) has written to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, urging the provincial government to allocate necessary funds for the four-laning of Highway 69. Currently, construction is not set to begin until 2029, with completion expected by 2037, marking a delay of nearly 40 years since the provincial government first announced the project. The federal government has already committed $169 million towards the project, contingent upon a matching contribution from the province, which has yet to be confirmed. Lapointe highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that delays have caused significant harm to the community. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation stated that progress has been made, with 84 kilometers of the highway already widened and ongoing consultations with local First Nations to expedite the remaining work. Lapointe expressed hope that negotiations with area Chiefs will conclude soon, emphasizing the need for a safe and efficient highway.
