A fourth-year engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur in West Bengal, identified as Halder, died by suicide in his hostel room, leaving behind a disturbing note for his family. The note indicated his intentions and provided a security number for the family to call. The message reached his family in Barasat at 10:45 A.M. on Tuesday, prompting his sister to alert the IIT security officer. Upon arriving at the hostel, the officer found the door locked from the inside. Police were called to the scene and broke down the door, discovering Halder hanging. He was rushed to BC Roy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Although initial findings suggest suicide, a formal statement will be issued following the autopsy. This tragic incident marks the ninth death of a student at the Kharagpur campus in just 15 months, and the second within a mere ten days. The previous death involved a third-year student who reportedly fell from a terrace. These incidents have raised significant concerns regarding the mental health support available to students at the institute.
