The Bharat Taxi App was launched by the Indian government in Mumbai as a direct competitor to established ride-hailing services like Uber and Rapido. Inaugurated by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, the app is designed to prioritize drivers by eliminating commission fees and offering them a stake in the platform. The driver version went live on April 23, while the passenger version is expected to be available in the first week of May. The app has already registered over 517,000 drivers and aims to serve around 5 million passengers. A key feature of the Bharat Taxi App is its focus on integrating electric vehicles, signaling a shift towards cleaner transportation options. The government is also facilitating access to Mudra loans for drivers transitioning to electric vehicles, with interest rates around 9.5%, lower than standard vehicle loans. The fare structure will be regulated to ensure competitiveness, with minimal commission charges expected to result in lower fares for passengers. Safety features, including an SOS button and police verification for drivers, are also integral to the app's design.
