The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has declared statewide protests on May 8 in response to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government's and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar's delay in inviting C. Joseph Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, to form the government. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single-largest party in the recent Assembly elections, securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. K. Selvaperunthagai, president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, accused the BJP and the Governor of undermining democratic principles and attempting to destabilize the electoral mandate. He emphasized that the Governor should follow established parliamentary conventions and invite Vijay to prove his majority. However, sources from Raj Bhavan indicated the Governor is seeking confirmation of adequate support before making a decision. This political tension has led to intense activity in Chennai as various parties engage in negotiations regarding potential government formations.
