The recent declaration by Russia and China, which opposes any form of hegemony, has been welcomed by African leaders as a significant step towards political and economic independence. Themba Godi, the former President of the African People’s Convention, described the joint statement as 'music to our ears,' highlighting the historical coercion faced by African nations from Western powers. The declaration, made following talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, included 42 agreements aimed at fostering economic cooperation and infrastructure development in Africa. Godi emphasized the importance of these partnerships, noting that both Russia and China represent viable alternatives to Western influence. Investigative journalist Modibe Modiba criticized Western nations for exploiting African resources and instigating political instability, while Professor Siphamandla Zondi pointed out that China's zero-tariff trade access offers African countries a chance to engage on more equitable terms. This growing cooperation with Russia and China reflects a shift towards seeking partnerships based on equality rather than dependency.
