In a significant move against unauthorized ride-hailing services, Maharashtra's Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has called for the shutdown of apps like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. In a letter dated May 12, Sarnaik highlighted that these companies have been operating passenger transport services without valid permissions or government approval, posing a serious threat to public safety. The state cyber crime department has been directed to block these apps and initiate legal proceedings against their owners. Data from the State Transport Authority indicated that enforcement teams detected 715 Rapido-linked bike taxis in Maharashtra, compared to only 18 Ola and 43 Uber vehicles. Enforcement actions have led to the detention of 110 Rapido and 15 Ola vehicles, with fines exceeding ₹11.85 lakh (approximately $14,300 USD) collected. Sarnaik emphasized the need for adequate safety measures, including driver verification and emergency response mechanisms, which he claims are lacking in these services. The state is also exploring a policy framework for electric bike taxis with green number plates, aiming to enhance safety and compliance in the sector.
