The Delhi High Court has mandated that X Corp, the parent company of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), remove videos depicting Arvind Kejriwal (Aam Aadmi Party leader) arguing his case in court on April 13. This decision follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Vaibhav Singh, who alleges that Kejriwal and others, including journalist Ravish Kumar, illegally recorded and circulated court proceedings related to an application for the recusal of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma in a liquor policy scam case. During the hearing, senior advocate Arvind Datar, representing Meta Platforms, stated that they had already taken down similar posts upon receiving a directive from the Registrar General of India. However, Google LLC's counsel noted that some flagged YouTube links did not contain the court proceedings. The court has directed Google to remove any such posts if they exist. The bench raised concerns about the feasibility of automatically identifying posts that violate court rules, which prohibit unauthorized recordings. The court has also included the Ministry of Information Technology (MeitY) in the proceedings, seeking its response and the presence of its secretary at the next hearing on July 6. The PIL alleges that Kejriwal's actions were part of a conspiracy to manipulate public sentiment and tarnish the judiciary's image. Singh has previously filed a similar PIL against Kejriwal's wife for unauthorized recordings, which led to the removal of those videos as well.
