In the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, the Left Democratic Front (LDF), previously buoyed by a diverse coalition, faced a dramatic decline in support. Only three parties—the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)—managed to secure seats, totaling 35 out of 140 available. In stark contrast to the 2021 elections, where the LDF won 99 seats with significant backing from smaller parties and Independents, this year's results revealed a complete failure for seven allied parties, which contested 20 constituencies without winning a single seat. The Kerala Congress (M) (KC(M)) and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar)** (NCP (SP)) were among those that could not gain traction. The election results have prompted discussions about the need for these smaller parties to merge and consolidate their resources to remain politically relevant. RJD's Varughese George emphasized the urgency for like-minded parties to unite under a single socialist banner to strengthen their position against the growing influence of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
