The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to Sheikh Abdul Rashid, a member of Parliament from Baramulla and the chief of the Awami Itihaad Party, allowing him to attend the funeral of his father, Haji Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, who passed away at the age of 85. The court's decision permits Rashid to be released until June 2, enabling him to participate in the last rites of his father, who had been suffering from serious health issues for the past two months. Haji Khazir, a respected educator, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi after being transferred from a hospital in Srinagar. Following the news of his death, the Awami Itihaad Party made a humanitarian appeal to the central government for Rashid's release. The deceased's body was flown back to Srinagar and is set to be buried in their native village in Langate. Political leaders, including Mehbooba Mufti of the Peoples Democratic Party and Altaf Bukhari of the Apni Party, have extended their condolences to Rashid and his family. Rashid has been in custody since 2019 and is facing serious allegations of terror funding under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
