The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is advancing its solid waste management strategy by planning a 1,000-tonne windrow composting plant on 20 acres of biomined land at the Perungudi dump yard. This facility will be developed under a public-private partnership model. Additionally, GCC will establish two smaller composting plants in Manali, each with a capacity of 50 tonnes per day, at a cost of ₹15 crore (roughly $1.8 million USD). These initiatives aim to scientifically process wet waste, significantly reducing the volume reaching landfills and supporting a circular waste management system. Currently, Chennai produces over 6,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, with a large portion being biodegradable. The new facilities will enhance local composting capacity, improve collection efficiency, and lower transportation costs, contributing to a more sustainable waste management approach. Environmental experts have praised the decentralisation of composting, highlighting its role in diverting organic waste from landfills and reducing methane emissions.
