Excavations beneath Notre Dame cathedral in Paris have unearthed significant historical artifacts, including a fourth-century coin stamped with the image of Emperor Constantine and medieval pottery marked with undeciphered symbols. The site, located on the Ile de la Cite, is being excavated as part of a project to beautify the area surrounding the cathedral, which was severely damaged in a fire in 2019. Archaeologists have been meticulously digging through layers of history, revealing remnants from Roman Paris, including grain pits and latrines. The findings are providing valuable insights into the city’s past, with layers dating back over 2,000 years. The project aims to create a shaded square with 160 new trees and a water feature by 2028, transforming the area for future visitors. This excavation is particularly noteworthy as it represents a rare opportunity to explore the historical layers beneath one of the world’s most famous cathedrals, with hopes of discovering even older artifacts from the Gauls.
