A proposed amendment to the Revenue Service Recruitment Rules in Jammu and Kashmir has escalated into a significant political issue concerning the status of the Urdu language. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns that the changes could weaken Urdu's role, which has historically been crucial for administration and community connection. PDP leader Iltija Mufti led a protest in Srinagar, emphasizing that Urdu is a vital part of the region's linguistic heritage. In contrast, the National Conference-led government, represented by Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, has dismissed these allegations, stating that no final decision has been made regarding Urdu's inclusion in recruitment processes. Wani reassured the public that Urdu remains essential for understanding revenue documents, which are primarily maintained in the language. Historically, Urdu became the official language of Jammu and Kashmir in 1889 and served as a link across various linguistic groups. Following the abrogation of Article 370, the Union government designated multiple official languages, which diminished Urdu's exclusive status. The BJP supports the removal of mandatory Urdu requirements, arguing it promotes inclusivity for speakers of other languages. However, concerns persist regarding potential administrative challenges if Urdu is removed from recruitment criteria.
