A 30-year-old man with Type 1 diabetes and end-stage renal disease received a new lease on life through a simultaneous pancreas-kidney (SPK) transplant at AIIMS Delhi, the first of its kind at the institute in 18 years. The patient had been on dialysis for two years before the surgery, which was performed using organs from a 50-year-old deceased donor from PGI Rohtak. Dr. Asuri Krishna, a professor at AIIMS, stated that the transplant not only restores kidney function but also significantly reduces insulin dependency, enhancing the patient's quality of life. Following the surgery, the patient can now walk with ease and requires only a minimal amount of insulin due to the immunosuppressive medications. This procedure is particularly significant given the low rates of organ donation in northern India and the shortage of trained transplant surgeons. Dr. Krishna emphasized that SPK transplantation is considered the gold standard for patients with both Type 1 diabetes and kidney failure, offering better long-term survival and metabolic control compared to kidney transplantation alone.
