Researchers have utilized muography, an advanced imaging technique based on cosmic rays, to discover a hidden burial chamber about ten meters beneath Naples, Italy. The chamber is located beneath the ancient Hellenistic necropolis of Neapolis, an area rich in archaeological significance. Traditional excavation methods are often slow and risky, making muography a valuable tool for archaeologists. This technique detects muons, which are produced when cosmic rays collide with the Earth's atmosphere. By tracking these particles, scientists identified an unexpected excess of muons, indicating a low-density void in the surrounding volcanic rock. To validate their findings, the team created a detailed 3D digital reconstruction, confirming the chamber's existence. This discovery highlights the potential for many more undiscovered sites beneath urban areas, prompting a reevaluation of existing archaeological maps. Muography offers a non-invasive approach that can guide future excavations, minimizing damage to both ancient ruins and modern infrastructure.
