Tenby's North Beach, a celebrated destination in Pembrokeshire, Wales, has lost its Blue Flag status due to concerns over water quality. The beach, which had enjoyed this accolade for over 25 consecutive years, saw its classification drop from 'excellent' to 'good' following sample tests conducted in July and August 2023. This marks the third year in a row that North Beach has failed to secure the award, which is granted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and recognizes beaches that meet strict cleanliness and management criteria. Owen Derbyshire, chief executive of Keep Wales Tidy, expressed disappointment over the news, emphasizing the beach's significance to local residents and businesses that rely on tourism. Natural Resources Wales is currently investigating the reasons behind the water quality decline, which has not yet been identified. A spokesperson from Welsh Water noted that various environmental factors contribute to water quality issues, and they are investing significantly to improve services across Wales. Despite the loss of the Blue Flag, North Beach remains a popular destination, ranking among the top beaches in Wales.
