Born in Urmston, Greater Manchester, he excelled in football while studying history at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University, where he captained the team to victory against Cambridge. After national service in the Royal Air Force, he became a history and politics teacher at Sir William Herschel grammar school in Slough, Berkshire, until his early retirement in 1992. Throughout his football and teaching career, he was supported by his wife, Marjorie, and is survived by their daughters, Linda and Karen.
