His remarks came after Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem dismissed the idea of direct talks with Israel, which have been facilitated by recent meetings between the US ambassadors of both nations. These discussions aim to negotiate peace after decades of conflict, with Lebanon and Israel officially at war since 1948. Katz emphasized that if the Lebanese government continues to support Hezbollah, it risks igniting further violence. He also called for the disarmament of Hezbollah, particularly in southern Lebanon, to prevent ongoing attacks on Israeli forces. In response, President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon stated that the direct talks were intended to resolve the conflict with Hezbollah, while also condemning those responsible for dragging Lebanon into war.
