Manipur violence: Around 10 people still remain untraceable

Guwahati: Around 10 people in Manipur still remain untraceable. Out of 38 people taken captive around 28 people were released on Friday in Manipur.A senior police officer who does not want to be named said, “ Security forces actively with civil society organisations are engaged and will ensure release of the rest of the people.”The government in a statement had stated on Friday that an unfortunate incident had happened at Zero Point in between Kotlen and Kotzim Inter Village Road, Kangpokpi District on May 13 in which unknown armed miscreants had ambushed civilian vehicles resulting in the deaths of three civilians and injuring four others. A case had been registered for further investigation. Immediate search operations were conducted in and around the spot and neighboring villages.The statement added, “In the aftermath of the incident, a number of civilians belonging to different communities were detained near Leilon Vaiphei, Saparmeina villages (Kangpokpi district) and Senapati district.The Government sprang into action. The Public leaders and all security forces made concerted efforts to trace these persons and get them released.As a result of the joint efforts of the Administration, Security Forces, public leaders and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), majority of the detained civilians, 28 in numbers, belonging to different communities, have been safely released. It added that all-out efforts are continuing in order to secure safe release of the remaining persons. The public is requested to cooperate with the Administration and Security Forces in maintaining peace and ensuring the safe release of the remaining civilians.These people belonging to both Naga and Kuki communities were taken into captivity in Manipur’s Kangpokpi and Senapati districts.Kuki Students’ Organisation Sadar Hills had announced a 48-hour total shutdown across Kangpokpi district in Manipur, beginning midnight of May 15, extending support to the shutdown call issued by Kuki Inpi Manipur over the continued detention of 14 Kuki civilians. These organisations claim that several of their people are in detention.Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR), along with several civil society organisations, submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister during a “Mass Rally for Justice” held in Churachandpur, condemning the killing of three Kuki-Zo religious leaders and raising concerns over continued violence in the region.
