Indivisible Princeton is organizing a peaceful vigil on Friday at 4 p.m. to urge New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill to take decisive action regarding Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention center located in Newark. The vigil will be held on Stockton Street, near Bayard Lane, directly in front of Monument Park and close to the governor's residence. Organizers emphasize the need for the governor to utilize state powers to protect detainees, their families, and protesters, especially in light of recent events where hundreds of detainees initiated a hunger strike. This protest has escalated into clashes with ICE officers, resulting in at least 17 arrests. The vigil will feature messages advocating for human rights, legal support for detainees, and calls for the closure of Delaney Hall. Attendees are encouraged to bring signs with slogans such as “Protect Protesters” and “Close Delaney Hall.” Additionally, the vigil will incorporate singing from the Singing Resistance Songbook, fostering a sense of community and solidarity among participants.
