On Friday, India announced that it is examining the extradition request for Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, a notable shift from its previous position of only acknowledging the request. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the request is being reviewed as part of ongoing judicial processes, emphasizing India's intent to engage constructively with all stakeholders involved. Sheikh Hasina has been in self-imposed exile in India since August 2024 after her government was ousted following significant protests. The Bangladesh government first sought her extradition in December 2024, and the request was reiterated during a recent meeting between Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Additionally, a new law passed by the Bangladeshi Parliament could impact Hasina's Awami League party, which has faced a ban from the interim government. India's position remains focused on fostering strong bilateral ties and ensuring inclusive political processes in Bangladesh as the country approaches its elections in February.
