A NASA-supported study reveals that the essential elements for life on Earth, phosphorus and nitrogen, primarily came from the inner Solar System, challenging previous beliefs about their origins. Researchers analyzed ancient meteorites to trace these elements' distribution during the Solar System's formation.
- 01Phosphorus and nitrogen, critical for life, were mainly sourced from the inner Solar System.
- 02The study published in Science Advances analyzed the phosphorus-to-nitrogen ratios in iron meteorites and chondrites.
- 03Iron meteorites are from the first generation of planetesimals, while chondrites are from a later generation.
- 04The formation of Jupiter influenced the distribution of these life-sustaining elements.
- 05The findings provide insights into the potential for habitable planets in other solar systems.

A recent study supported by NASA has proposed a new understanding of how Earth obtained the crucial elements for life, specifically phosphorus and nitrogen. The research, published in the journal Science Advances, indicates that these elements were primarily delivered from the inner regions of the Solar System, rather than from the outer regions as previously believed. By examining ancient meteorites, scientists analyzed the phosphorus-to-nitrogen (PN) ratios in different types of space rocks. They discovered that the earliest planetesimals had higher PN ratios in the outer Solar System, while later planetesimals showed higher ratios closer to the Sun. This reversal is thought to be linked to the formation of Jupiter, which restricted material movement between the inner and outer Solar System. Lead author Debjeet Pathak from Rice University emphasized that this study suggests Earth's life-essential elements were sourced mainly from the inner Solar System, reshaping our understanding of Earth's origins and providing new insights into the search for habitable planets beyond our Solar System.
