In Tambaram, Chennai, the open burning of garbage has become a pressing issue, raising significant health and pollution concerns among residents. Reports indicate that local panchayat workers have been setting fire to heaps of garbage, particularly near Thiruvanchery, creating thick smoke and foul odors. The Tambaram Corporation generates around 450 metric tonnes of waste daily, yet the collection and management practices are inadequate. Residents from areas like Pallavaram and Chromepet have noted that garbage is only collected thrice a week, leading to waste accumulation in public spaces. Activists, including David Manohar, emphasize that the corporation's waste management protocols are not being properly enforced, as workers frequently burn waste in different locations when complaints arise. Environmental concerns are heightened as burning plastics releases toxic pollutants, which can exacerbate respiratory issues and other chronic health conditions. In response to these concerns, a senior official from Tambaram Corporation stated that they have instructed the private contractor to cease burning garbage and will investigate the complaints to ensure compliance with waste management regulations.
