While the Pentagon's $1.1 billion 'Drone Dominance' initiative aims to enhance US capabilities, American drones often cost upwards of $15,000, significantly higher than Chinese models. Furthermore, China's control over essential drone components, such as motors and sensors, complicates US efforts. In late 2024, China blacklisted Skydio, a leading US drone manufacturer, limiting its access to critical supplies. To counter these challenges, the US is implementing a new procurement strategy that includes long-term buy orders from domestic suppliers and plans to ban foreign-made drones by 2027. Despite these initiatives, analysts caution that if a conflict arises before these measures take effect, the US may face difficult decisions regarding compliance with sourcing rules.
