The Indian government has implemented new regulations mandating nine standard pack sizes for edible oils to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. The Department of Consumer Affairs has amended its Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for the determination of net quantity and standard pack sizes, allowing manufacturers, packers, and importers a three-month transition period to comply. The standard pack sizes include 200 ml/g, 500 ml/g, 1 litre/kg, 2 litre/kg, 3 litre/kg, 4 litre/kg, 5 litre/kg, 15 litre/kg, and 20 litre/kg, covering major oils such as palm, soybean, sunflower, and mustard. However, smaller packages below 200 ml or 200 grams are exempt to maintain the availability of affordable options. The move addresses concerns raised by industry representatives regarding irregular packaging sizes that complicate price comparisons. Previously, various non-standard sizes made it challenging for consumers to discern value across similar products. The new regulations aim to enhance transparency in the edible oils market, benefiting consumers by simplifying their purchasing process.
