Oil India Limited (OIL) announced a significant discovery of natural gas in its third exploratory well, Vijayapuram-3, located approximately 15 kilometers from the east coast of the Andaman Islands at a depth of 355 meters in the Offshore Andaman Block AN-OSHP-2018/1. This well confirms the presence of hydrocarbons, following a similar discovery in the second well, Vijayapuram-2, reported on September 26, 2025. Initial production testing at Vijayapuram-3 revealed natural gas at depths exceeding 1,900 meters in the Eocene formation, confirmed through continuous flaring. OIL is currently conducting gas sampling to determine the gas's composition and calorific value, as well as isotope studies to understand its origin. The company has initiated an appraisal program that includes reprocessing existing 2D seismic data and acquiring an additional 600 square kilometers of 3D seismic data, with plans for appraisal well drilling once data processing is completed. This discovery is expected to guide OIL's future exploration strategies in the region.
