The retail landscape in the UK is showing signs of recovery, with more than 13 new retail stores opening each week, resulting in a net increase of 723 stores across England and Wales by the end of 2025. This marks a significant shift after years of decline, as the total number of retail premises reached 507,810. However, the sector still grapples with the aftermath of the pandemic, having lost 6,045 retail properties since 2020, with London suffering the most closures. The North West is the only region to report a decline, losing 41 premises. New openings are partly attributed to the innovative repurposing of larger spaces into smaller retail units. Despite these positive trends, challenges remain, including rising business rates and labor costs, which continue to strain the industry. Experts emphasize the need for retailers to reassess their business rates, as recent evaluations have shown a 9.3% increase in rateable values, which may not align with current market conditions.
