Controversy erupted during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) when KKR batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi was given out for obstructing the field. This decision came in the 5th over of the match, with KKR already struggling after losing two early wickets. Raghuvanshi, attempting to run, was sent back by teammate Cameron Green when a throw from LSG struck him as he changed direction to return to his crease. The third umpire ruled him out, citing that he had significantly altered his path, which led to the obstruction. The decision was controversial, with Raghuvanshi visibly upset, hitting his bat on the ground and throwing his helmet as he left the field. Commentators and KKR's head coach Abhishek Nayar expressed surprise at the ruling. According to ICC rule 37.1, a batsman can be given out for obstructing the field if they intentionally distract the fielding side while the ball is in play. Earlier in the match, LSG won the toss and chose to bowl, while KKR remained unchanged from their previous game.
