An alarming incident at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital (MCH) has raised serious concerns about patient care protocols after a post-surgical patient developed maggot infestation on his leg. Public health expert B. Ekbal has called for a comprehensive medical and clinical audit to evaluate surgical protocols, post-operative care routines, and infection control standards. He criticized the tendency to scapegoat individual staff members while ignoring systemic issues that contribute to such negligence. The Kerala Medical Postgraduates’ Association (KMPGA) has also protested against the portrayal of the incident as the fault of a single junior doctor, demanding an independent inquiry. The patient, who suffered a severe Type 3B Both Bone fracture, underwent emergency surgery with vacuum dressing, yet the lack of adequate monitoring led to the infection. Experts stress that patient safety relies on coordinated teamwork among healthcare professionals, and emphasize the importance of establishing clear protocols and accountability mechanisms to enhance the quality of care.
