As of June 7, Kerala has reported 85 confirmed cases of shigellosis, a highly contagious bacterial disease, with outbreaks occurring in districts such as Wayanad, Kozhikode, Alappuzha, and Malappuram. The Health department has noted over 70 probable cases, particularly affecting children and vulnerable populations. Tragically, two children have died from the infection, underscoring its potential severity. Symptoms typically manifest within one to two days and include fever, diarrhea, and nausea. Health officials are urging the public to maintain rigorous hygiene practices, including proper hand washing and safe food handling, to curb the spread of the disease. The Health Minister has mandated the Food Safety department to strengthen checks on food establishments, ensuring compliance with hygiene standards. Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan has called for urgent preventive measures and coordinated efforts between health authorities and local governments to manage the situation effectively. Public advisories recommend boiling drinking water and avoiding stale or raw foods to minimize risk.
