Tourism in Pahalgam, a popular destination in Jammu and Kashmir, is beginning to recover a year after the devastating terror attack at Baisaran on April 22, 2025, which left 26 people dead, including 25 tourists. Official statistics reveal that 3.36 lakh visitors arrived in Pahalgam from January to April 20, 2026, significantly lower than the 5.51 lakh recorded during the same period in 2025. Among this year's visitors, 2.79 lakh were domestic tourists, while 4,486 were foreigners. The aftermath of the attack saw a sharp decline in tourism, with only 1.75 lakh domestic tourists visiting from May to December 2025. However, there has been a gradual revival, particularly during the winter months of December, January, and February. Despite the reopening of many tourist spots, including Betaab and Aru valleys, stakeholders emphasize that the recovery is incomplete. The Jammu and Kashmir administration had closed 48 tourist sites as a security measure post-attack, with 39 reopening after security reviews. Prominent hotelier Wahid Malik noted that while tourism improved during winter, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to affect the sector across the valley.
